How to Write a Cover Letter With ChatGPT (That Recruiters Actually Read)

Recruiters can now spot a ChatGPT cover letter from the first sentence, because they read thirty of them a day and they all open the same way: "I am writing to express my enthusiasm...". Here is the uncomfortable truth behind that: the letters sound identical because everyone gives the AI the same input, namely none.

A cover letter written from your real stories and the company's real needs does not sound like AI, even when AI helped write every sentence. This guide shows that workflow in four steps, and it pairs with our resume guide as the second half of your application.

What a cover letter is actually for

Your resume lists what you did. The cover letter answers the one question the resume cannot: why this person, for this job, at this company. It is a bridge, not a summary. If a paragraph would survive being pasted into any other application unchanged, it is not doing bridge work, and it should go.

Step 1: collect the raw material

Two inputs, five minutes: the job posting, and one or two true stories that prove you can do the hardest thing the posting asks for. If you built STAR stories for interview prep, reuse them here; it is the same material wearing a different outfit.

Here is a job posting: [paste]. Here are 2 short true stories from my work that I think are relevant: [describe them, messy is fine]. Here is why I actually want this job: [one honest sentence]. First, tell me: which single requirement in this posting matters most to the employer, and which of my stories speaks to it best? Do not write the letter yet.

Making the AI analyze before it writes is the step almost everyone skips, and it is where the personalization comes from.

Step 2: draft in three paragraphs, no more

Now write the letter, three short paragraphs, under 250 words total: 1) An opening that names something specific about this company or role and connects it to my honest reason. Banned openings: "I am writing to express", "I am excited to apply". 2) My strongest story, told with a concrete result. 3) A confident close that says what I would do in my first months, and asks for the conversation. Plain language. No "passionate", "dynamic", "leverage", or "proven track record".

Two hundred and fifty words is not a limitation, it is a kindness. Nobody has ever complained that a cover letter was too short and too specific.

Step 3: the specificity test

Run this before you send anything:

Read my letter and highlight every sentence that could appear unchanged in a letter to a different company. For each one, either make it specific to this company and role, or cut it and tighten the letter.

A letter that survives this test cannot sound like AI, because generic phrasing is the only thing that ever does. The same test, incidentally, improves every email you send.

Step 4: the human minute

Read it out loud once. Change any word you would not say across a coffee table. Check the company name, the role title, and the hiring manager's name letter by letter, because AI will cheerfully carry a wrong name to the finish line. Then send it and move on; the perfect cover letter you never send loses to the good one you do.
